Utility-sparked wildfires in recent years have devastated vast swaths of the state, killing people and destroying small towns in their wake. “This record settlement provides significant compensation to taxpayers for the extensive costs of fighting the Thomas fire and for the widespread damage to public lands,” First Assistant U.S. Atty. Hayley Smith is an environment reporter for the Los Angeles Times, where she covers the many ways climate change is reshaping life in California, including drought, floods, wildfires and deadly heat. The regulatory agency’s five-member committee approved the settlement agreement on a 4-1 vote, with Commissioner Darcie Houck voting in opposition, expressing hesitation about the new tool and a desire for more time and community involvement. Earlier this year, the California Department of Justice determined that Edison would not face criminal charges for its role in that blaze. Maria Montessori, Helen Keller, The kings of Siam and Sweden, and many great industrialists like Henry Ford, George Eastman, and Harvey Firestone spent time at the home. In the company of such great people, this can be hard on children to fathom just how famous their father is; and may also have been a contributing factor to their early development. He was stubborn and self-made, a potent combination that often results in excessive self-pride, not easily admitting to mistakes.
To finance this work, Edison sold all his stock in General Electric. Despite ten years of work and millions of dollars spent on research and development, Edison was never able to make the process commercially practical, and lost all the money he had invested. This would have meant financial ruin had not Edison continued to develop the phonograph and motion pictures at the same time. As it was, Edison entered the new century still financially secure and ready to take on another challenge.

Edison worked in a number of cities throughout the United States before arriving in Boston in 1868. Here Edison began to change his profession from telegrapher to inventor. He received his first patent on an electric vote recorder, a device intended for use by elected bodies such as Congress to speed the voting process. Edison resolved that in the future he would only invent things that he was certain the public would want.

Closing the building is necessary so that the work can be carried out safely and expeditiously.

Almost everyone in the US ceramics world has passed through its doors at one time as a teacher, resident or student, including Peter Voulkos, Toshiko Takaezu, Betty Woodman, David Salle, Simone Leigh and Kathy Butterly. Founded on Thanksgiving Day in 1902, Greenwich House opened its doors as a settlement house to help New York’s increasing immigrant population adjust to life in a new country. The demand for music education was so high that Greenwich House expanded its Music School to a new building.

Greenwich House is a century-old gem hiding in plain sight within reach of everyone in New York City. Designed by Delano & Aldrich, the three buildings have an architectural grandeur from the early 1900s and yet are a contemporary hive of creativity, learning, social services, and community. In November 2022, Greenwich House celebrated its 120th anniversary and can look back over a long and distinguished history of serving the community. Today, the organization is more lively than ever with its well-known Greenwich House Pottery, Greenwich House Music School, summer programs, and social services.
The studio at Eighth Avenue and West 14th Street will open in early 2024 and offer 30 new classes each season. "Every time I think I’m going to keep one smooth and just paint, it never happens," she laughs. "That’s just part of my signature now, I guess. Clay is meant to be manipulated however your hand touches it." The Shape the Future capital campaign will raise $7.5 million for critical updates and enhancements so this community arts space can thrive for years to come.
The studios at Greenwich House Pottery – Chelsea are equipped with a handbuilding classroom, a throwing classroom, and a mixed-use studio space, three electric kilns, a slab roller, and an extruder. This studio specializes in mid-range firings, offering two clay bodies and a large selection of cone 6 glazes. We are pleased to offer the Greenwich House Pottery Residency Program, which is designed to support artists’ projects and to increase awareness around the importance of creative engagement with ceramics. Bloch explained that Greenwich House is, in fact, three historic buildings, 16 Jones Street, 46 Barrow Street, and 27 Barrow Street (headquarters), that provide 60,000 square feet under management. The organization has an additional six sites in the West Village and downtown Manhattan, and all together manages 150 full time employees and 300 part time seasonal staff and faculty. Half of the Greenwich House’s work is health and human services, including five older adult centers, and the other half is the arts and cultural classes, the nursery and summer schools.

There are several significant and more subtle space, lighting, and other cosmetic updates presently included in our capital project plan, and our aim has been to minimize any additional short-term cosmetic changes that would only have a short-term use.
Emboldened by her new experience, Barnett endeavored to create a body of work at Greenwich House that marries experimentation and historic reference. In tandem, Fernández is leading a $7m capital campaign to modernise and expand GHP’s 1928 Colonial Revival townhouse on Jones Street. Pottery classes have been offered at Greenwich House for nearly its entire history, beginning with classes as part of a larger handicraft program in 1904. Currently Greenwich House is relaunching a fundraising campaign ($1 to $3 million) for the Pottery. After more than 100 years in operation, they are still working with 16th century tools. The reputation and work emanating from the Pottery is resulting in long waiting lists. Greenwich House is also seeking to expand its music and theater and performing arts spaces, install sound proofing and modernization, and come up with various ways to support aspiring professional artists giving them the time and space to practice their instruments.
Illustrious students included Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollock, the latter of whom worked there as a janitor to offset the cost of classes. Throughout the century, there were outstanding leaders and directors of the Pottery School who led the community for significant periods of time and left their marks. Greenwich Street Potters for example was for a time a real working studio that earned revenue by creating pottery and ceramics for famous people’s houses and gardens, and a display at the 1939 World’s Fair. Then priorities changed again and it became more of a place for artists, community and classes with top teachers and mentors and visiting artists. “It is all about the importance of materials and learning, and Pottery offers people the opportunity to explore the world and their lives outside of the factories and workplaces. “There’s just an explosion of people working in clay or wanting to,” says Fabio J. Fernández, the director of GHP, which offers classes, an artist residency programme and exhibition space at 16 Jones Street.
“And it had come to a point where I was translating other people’s vision with the carpets. In 1963, Greenwich House received a federal grant to establish a Counseling Center, the first walk-in, outpatient counseling center for drug treatment in New York. Twenty years later, in 1987, Greenwich House founded the AIDS Mental Health Project, a first-of-its-kind, which was soon followed by the Children’s Safety Project to provide prevention, counseling and treatment services for children suffering from trauma and abuse. In 1991, primary care service for HIV patients began – the first, and for many years, the only services in the city specifically addressing the needs of those living with HIV/AIDS. Eventually Yarbrough grew restless, leaving the trio in 1977 and returning in 1980, only to depart again after a few months of touring in which the old group tensions arose again.
Foster Village Charlotte’s mission is to make that transition easier and provide resources and support for children and families. The journey is often lonely and emotionally exhausting for everyone involved. It was this challenge that prompted four Charlotte-based foster moms to seek out support during their own foster care journeys. After finding each other, they quickly realized the need for a community of support that would ensure every foster parent had the resources they needed to continue offering a safe place for children. Today, even with the disruption of the pandemic, Foster Village thrives.

Life Lessons: Becky Santoro of Foster Village - Charlotte magazine
You play, show them around, and blow out the candles with so many adults that are here just for you. The team launched Foster the Movement, a fundraising campaign that asked foster families, volunteers and donors to share their stories on social media and ask for support from friends and family. The Village overwhelmingly responded, raising more than $80,000 to help continue the services that had supported many of them so well.
Five years ago, shortly after she welcomed her first foster child, Santoro began to regularly meet three other foster parents at a playground. They told her they lacked resources and felt overwhelmed. Santoro envisioned an organization to support foster caregivers, and by the time she welcomed her second foster child, Santoro and the three other parents—Molly Zalewski, Sloan Crawford, and Traci Prillaman—had co-founded Foster Village.
A recent Foster Village survey of more than 100 of its client families found that 75% of caregivers are likely to continue fostering in 2022 because of the organization’s services. All said they depend on Foster Village to learn how to access resources and navigate the system. When a family decides to foster a child, it can be scary and overwhelming.
I would have loved for my (foster) children’s father to have access to a home-like setting like our current resource center in the Oakhurst neighborhood. We hope to open a larger resource center so we can provide more intentional programming around the foster and biological family on their road home. When Raeya was 6 months old, we both left teaching. I took a job at Watershed, working in the children’s program. During that time, I said to Tony, “Let’s do foster care.” Looking back, that did not feel like the right time to start something new. Tony was starting his business, I was in a new job, we had little kids.
When Foster Village Charlotte joined Cultivate in 2020, they were an emerging organization that had a groundswell of grassroots support, an ambitious vision and deep passion for local children and families. The FVC team had recently moved into a Center that would serve as a home for their support groups, Welcome Pack storage and space for foster families and biological families to work together to support the children in their care. At Foster Village Charlotte (FVC), the commitment to providing a supportive space for children and foster families goes beyond the ordinary. FVC facilitates connections, offers educational and emotional support, and equips caregivers with essential advocacy tools. My vision has always been for Foster Village to be a safe haven for kids to come back to over and over again, one that’s comfortable and dignifying for their families.
Our volunteer program offers a variety of practical opportunities to get involved and support families in practical ways that make a tangible difference in their foster care journey. Imagine you are the child again and you have a birthday coming up. It's been almost a year since you've been living with your foster family and although you are bonding with them you are struggling with your longing to be with your parents. It's been almost a year since you've been in a home environment and you ache for being in "limbo." But then you learn your party is at the FVC Resource Center and the invitation includes both families.

Foster Village Charlotte knew where they wanted to go – but they also knew they needed help to build a strong foundation that would make them sustainable for years to come. “When we joined Cultivate, we had a lot of momentum and community support,” said Founder and Executive Director Becky Santoro. We recently hired a licensed clinical social worker. We also launched a “before your first placement” group. At the end of four weeks, new foster parents have an opportunity to partner with a seasoned foster parent mentor to walk them through their first placement.
After Maeve was born, Tony started roasting coffee in the backyard and selling it to friends and family for fun. This went on for a couple of years, through the birth of our second daughter, Raeya.
